While we all try to protect our pets from danger, accidents can and do happen. Emergency situations such as road accidents, neighborhood fights, poisoning and serious illness may all arise for our animal friends. When the need arises, Vet24 emergency vet services are available 24/7.

The best thing you can do for your pet if an emergency strikes is to be well prepared. It’s important that you know how to keep calm in the event of an emergency, so you can help your pet as much as possible. Knowing what to do and what not to do can make a difference to saving your pet’s life.

Have an Emergency Plan for Your Pet

When crisis strikes, it can be hard to make calm, rational decisions. Especially if you’re confronted with an emergency situation during the middle of the night.

Make sure you have an emergency plan in place for your pet before you need it. Talk to your vet about whether or not they provide 24-hour service and where they direct after-hours calls.

Know Where to Turn for 24-Hour Emergency Vet Care

A key aspect of your emergency pet plan is knowing where to turn in case of emergency – day and night – so you can seek professional veterinary assistance immediately.

Call your veterinary clinic to give the vet staff advanced notice that you’re coming in and let them know what your pet’s symptoms are.

Does your regular local vet provide around the clock 24-hour care? If it’s the middle of the night, or after business hours, your vet may refer emergency cases to a nearby animal hospital. Find out where this emergency vet clinic is.

Keep the name, number and address of your regular vet, as well as the nearest emergency animal hospital, somewhere handy like stuck up on the refrigerator door. You can also save this numbers in your mobile phone for easy access.

Keep Your Pet Calm in an Emergency

Animals that are injured, scared, or in severe pain may suddenly scratch or bite. It’s important that pet owners know that their usually mild-mannered dog or cat may lash out in emergency situations.

Be careful of teeth and claws in an emergency situation. Try placing a blanket over your pet’s carrier while driving to the vet to help keep them as calm as possible.

Remove Financial Stress with Pet Insurance

Pet insurance can greatly relieve the financial stress of a pet emergency – you don’t want to be worried about money in an already stressful time. You never know when something may happen and you don’t want to leave your pet untreated because of money problems.
